Finding the right freelance website can be as difficult as finding the right developer for your project. It’s 2022, and there are hundreds of websites claiming to be best in terms of talent. If this is your first time hiring talent from freelance websites, then it’s prudent to know the do’s and don'ts before jumping into the sea of resumes.
The first thing to note is that although there are a lot of websites for hiring talent, there are only a select few that can get you quality talent. To understand which platform is best suited for you, we have listed down five questions that you should answer before getting started.

- What is the level of experience required for this role?

Upwork
Upwork is one of the most popular freelance marketplace with over twelve million users worldwide. The platform connects clients with freelance talents who advertise their skills for positions ranging from website development, copywriting, data entry, voice transcribing, article translation and many more.
It has a huge talent pool, and you are bound to get a lot of competing offers within hours of submitting your job post but the quality of the talent is amiss.
Clients prefer Upwork if they have a short-term requirement for a project, and want to get it done on a limited budget. It is not the best in terms of finding good Tech talent.
Toptal
Toptal is regarded as one of the premier hiring platforms, focused exclusively on high quality Tech talent. It has a limited, albeit experienced pool of developers having experience working at top multinational companies and startups. They have a solid hiring system that allows only the best developers to join their community.
The only con of Toptal is it’s high cost. Given the exclusive talent pool, the cost can sometimes be twice as much as the market standard. They also take a minimum of one month to find you a talent, so if you’re hiring for a time-sensitive project, then this might not be the best for you.
Stack Overflow
Stack Overflow is primarily an online community of developers where they post and discuss their doubts related to Tech. They also have a job board wherein a company can post their job requirements, and the description gets shown on relevant pages related to that role on the website. Since the entire website is focused on developers, it is easy to attract the right set of candidates who would be interested in the role.
The con of using Stack Overflow is that you have to post and manage the job listing yourself, and then filter and interview the candidates yourself. This essentially brings it to the same level as any other job website.
People per Hour
People Per Hour is another freelance marketplace, similar to Upwork. As the name suggests People per hour help clients hire talent on an hourly basis, though they have also introduced hiring based on a project.
The downside is that the freelancers on the platform are not limited to developers and you can also find designers, social media, and SEO people there.
If you have a limited budget and are looking to hire someone by the hour, then this is the platform for you.
Freelancer
Freelancer is the frontrunner in terms of number of registered users, and the number of job postings active on the platform. It boasts a massive 25 million users base and allows you to hire talent for almost any task including writing, mobile app development, design, or marketing.
This isn’t the best place to find developers but if you’re looking for a short-term requirement, then this could be a great option. If your project is supposed to run longer then it’s better to find a platform that is more compliant.
The cons of using Freelancer is the lack of quality, and having to deal with the entire process of posting a requirement, shortlisting, and then hiring a candidate. This can be particularly overwhelming when you are sifting through hundreds of applications for just one position.
GitHub Jobs
Github is primarily a software development platform meant for developers to share their code and collaborate with other developers on Tech projects.
They also have a job board where you can publish the job you’re hiring for. Although you will have a good stream of talent coming in, going through individual profiles and filtering the suitable ones can be taxing.
